Immigrants Need 5 New Vaccinations

Immigrants seeking legal permanent residency in the USA must have five new additional vaccinations, depending on their age, as of July 1, 2008. This is in addition to the immunizations they have already received. A 30-day grace period is allowed for any medical examination conducted before August 1, 2008.

On that date, the new vaccinations if applicable must be administered before the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will approve any applicant for adjustment of status. The five new vaccinations that must be acquired are:

  • Rotavirus
  • Hepatitis A
  • Meningococcal
  • Human papillomavirus
  • Zoster

(abbreviated titles), and is in the process of having a beloved one visit or join them here in the US, take special note of, file and heed the above announcement.

USCIS has posted a list of ?Frequently Asked Questions? about the revised vaccination requirements at: For additional help with the Form I-693, call the USCIS Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283.

This form must be submitted in a sealed envelope directly from the physician, along with the Form 1-485 package, to the Service Center or District Office where the applicant is filing his or her adjustment of status application. There is no filing fee.

Please note that the medical exam must be conducted by a physician designated by USCIS as a civil surgeon.

Applicants can obtain the names and phone numbers of designated civil surgeons in their area by dialing the USCIS National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283. They will be required to provide their zip code, and are asked to have a pen or pencil ready to write down the list of civil surgeons in their area.

Australia Marriage Visas also recommends that they ask if there any websites that will give them relevant data of the vaccinations of physicians in their area.

Special note should also be made that the physician?s findings will be valid only for 12 months in general, so applicants should schedule their medical examination as close as possible to the time they file for adjustment of status.
